Today Reto and I will head to the White Mountains Recreational Area just north of Fairbanks. It a hilly, very scenic trail system maintained by BLM and frequently used by mushers. There are cabins located roughly every 20 miles used by skiers, snowmachiners, and mushers. With the current warm temperatures - 0 to 20 - we will have little need for a cabin so plan to camp out just off the trail. We will do two 50 and one 70 mile runs, camping in between.
There are several races going on this weekend, one starting in Cantwell - the Denali Doubles - and one in Big Lake - the Klondike 300. I had hoped to field a team in one of them but with Iditarod Food drops due on Monday, we could not squeeze another race into the schedule, thus the camping trip to harden them up and look at the team candidates some more.
I have a good idea of who will be in the Iditarod team now and they are a solid group. Now I just need to select the final two or three dogs. I have a very nice group of team dogs so my priority is to fill out the leader pool which is currently Teva, Shy Girl, Pistol, Athena, Screamer, Screech, Foxy, Abbi, Pebbles and Doc, a much deeper pool than last year and all but one Iditarod finishers. Two leaders I am hoping to bring with me - Phoenix and Maya - have not raced this year due to injuries; I would love to have these two 2009 finishers in the team this year but only if they are healthy. Other dogs likely to be in the Team are Barney (3x finisher), Skor (a rookie), Thor (1x), Tiger (3x), and Tempe, all really tough proven team dogs.
All for now. Need to get dressed and pack up the dogs.

I am ten years old and have chosen you and your team to follow for the 2010 Iditarod race.
A few years ago on vacation we went to Alaska and rode in a sled pulled by dogs. It was fun - even though there was no snow at the time.
